It wasn't until they killed her mother that Gillian realized what she'd been lured into.

Drowned, the police said. She passed out in the bathtub and drowned.

Daybreak said they were right, but Gillian knew deep inside they were liars. The monsters had killed her. She saw their ruthless, hungry eyes on her and she knew the truth.

David didn't know when Gillian broke in Rashel's room to get stakes. She didn't tell him when she slipped out at night to stalk the corridors, to make them all pay. She'd smile secretly, knowing they'd blame a faceless enemy.

She'd been fooled once; she wouldn't do it again. She knew what was coming, and she had to choose a side.
