For art's sake!

There is a lake in Weerien that turns, for a few brief days in the hottest part of the summer, a crystalline shade of purple. The water stays perfectly clear so you can see all the way down to the very bottom, where little castles of sand are built. At night the whole lake glows from the lights in these artful homes, but in the day the city is empty. All the merfolk are at the surface.

Charles has come here every year for the past five. The mermaids are enthusiastic models for his sketches, and they only take payment in kisses.
