The Problem of Pain
PG-13. 05/29/2005.
The hardest thing is sleep. The Redferns rest through the clean light of the sun, and John burrows into dreams, into Dove's arms, where he is forever safe and unafraid.
The hardest thing is remembering. Hunter wakes him with broken bones, John's hands clenched, crushed between his. John shudders afterward, as he heals. In his mind his mother kneels, and he crawls in her sheltering lap. She cups his hands and he is part of her prayer.
The hardest thing is faith. John is a mirror reflecting the light of God back in His face, saving nothing for himself, and Dove is gone, gone, gone, past where anyone can ever reach her again.
