(Thwarting) Destiny
PG-13. 02/04/2005.

The summer after senior year was over, Cassie stayed at home, and dreamed. In the fall she'd go to USC to do God-knows-what, but for the three months in between, she wanted nothing but...peace.

Of course, Cassie wasn't an ordinary girl, and she didn't have ordinary dreams. After only a few nights, she realized the summer would be anything but peaceful.

She would wake to sweat evaporating on her skin, tingling on her chest and stomach, between her legs. Like the light touch of skilled fingers. For years, she'd dreamt things that came true, and she could only wish in her heart of hearts that this was one of those times.

Cassie was still very much surprised when she met the boy. She saw him in a crowd at the mall, and even though her dream was only a blur of mouths and hands, shivers and whispers--she recognized him instantly.

He was a beautiful boy; there was no simpler way to say it. She came right out and told him, "I dreamed about you," and unlike even her mother, who quietly denied Cassies prophecies, he merely smiled, and nodded.

John understood Cassie, in a way she'd never thought any boy could. His coal-black eyes watched her so intently. He would kiss her unexpectedly, like when she reached out to tuck a stray black hair behind his ear.

Being with him was so good, just like in the dreams--maybe better. She'd wrap her legs around his pale skinny hips in his dingy apartment, hold on for dear life as the night wore on. She didn't care how much her mother yelled in the morning; it was worth it.

They were destined to be together, she and John. Cassie didn't need a dream to tell her that. So when John said he had a job back East, and had to go, she packed a bag, left her mother a note, and went with him.

Cassie wasn't sure what she'd do, come the end of summer. Who knew where she'd be then? September was still more than a month away.

And, she told herself, it all had to work out, in the end. Everything would be all right, now that she'd found John.
