L. J. Smith
The Highway is for Gamblers Matt and Bonnie and Meredith on a roadtrip, ready to start a new life. Together. A quiet episodic story of being surprised by lust and love. By idolatrie. The Vampire Diaries, R. Snow Angel A wintery Katherine character study. An imagist lovely little drabble. By Taylor. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Motherfucker A sort of sequel to "Welcome to Squeezebox," recommended elsewhere on this page, this also works well as a standalone. Midlife crisis Matt moves to New York, determined to lose himself in the forbidden, and gets more than he bargained for. By Ash Kennedy. The Vampire Diaries, NC-17. The Appearance of Reality This reminds me of a Matt/Stefan version of Memento. Sort of. Mostly it's just strange and sweet and malignant all at the same time. By idolatrie. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. Unbound AU. Damon/Elena. Tragic and beautiful and, most importantly, believable. What if Damon hadn't stopped Elena quickly enough? By TangledAria. The Vampire Diaries, R. Playing House An incredibly morbid offbeat romance. It is positively scary how in-character this Katherine-perspective fic is. Seriously. Scary. By Incanto. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Number Thirteen Black John/Cassie, poetic and painful and arousing and dark and wrong and oh-so-right. By Heather. The Secret Circle, R. Maybe, Maybe Not A footnote, a horror story, a fairy tale. Jenny's grandfather waits to pay the price. It's an LJS book if H. P. Lovecraft wrote it instead. By Cathyrn. The Forbidden Game, PG-13. In the Calm of the Morning Simply incredible. The best cross-series LJS fic I've ever read, and one of the best fics I've ever read, period. At the edge of the world, Gabriel survives. By Chris. Dark Visions/Night World/The Secret Circle, PG-13. Contradictions in Character Brought On by Alcohol A fun little tale of Damon ruining Elena and Stefan's happy domesticity. Clearly not for the first time. By Cathyrn. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Wolf in the Breast A Black John/Cassie fic that is at once terrible and erotic and catastrophic and merciless. And may have the highest death count/word count ratio in the entire fandom. By Taylor. The Secret Circle, NC-17. Blackberry Wine (remix) A reworking of Heather C's "Blackberry Wine," recommended earlier on this page. The author reweaves and warps the original story into a horrific fable on the dangers of ingratitude. Delightful. By diva311. The Vampire Diaries, R. duty: an indulgence for the deserving A story of Stefan, pre-series, plus another familiar face. Life after wartime. A study of immortality in the face of death and despair. Positively brilliant. By idolatrie. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13 Wings Oh. My. Gods. What a gorgeously intricate, visceral scene. I really don't know what else to say besides: Read it. Now. By Heather C. The Vampire Diaries, R. Time Turns Everything to Gray The beginning of this actually brought tears to my eyes. These kind of distant-future things really get to me, especially when the Salvatores are involved. By Cathyrn. The Vampire Diaries, NC-17. The Things You Miss A very subtle and quiet story that's all the more effective because of it. This story of undeclared love is moody and more than a little sad. By Rhiannon. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Tainted The thing that really grabs me here is Damon's portrayal as somehow broken. It's not an easy thing to pull off, but here? I just ache for him. By Baloo. The Vampire Diaries, R. Perfection I have never pictured Dee/Zach, but this fic makes it seem obvious. Great banter, great plot, great characterization. Great everything. By Janet. The Forbidden Game, PG. Moments *sings* Written for meeeee! But that aside, it's just a great fic. It's Dee/Jenny that isn't easy or romantic or even good, yet feels completely realistic. It breaks your heart in a good way. By Elisabeth. The Forbidden Game, PG. Joining Circle Daybreak This was actually a really pleasant surprise--soulmate fic that isn't schmoopy and feels very real. This is a character arc that really propels you onward, to a very satisfying conclusion. And was that Quinn/Thierry UST I saw? By Finta. Night World, PG-13. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Awwwwwwww! Matt/Stefan is officially the cutest pairing of all time, and this story is particularly warm and toasty and cuddly. Again, I say awwwwww. By Red. The Vampire Diaries, PG. For the Asking A total mindfuck of a story, a glimpse at an AU world so magnificent it should take your breath away. It's Elena, and Damon, and something dark and rich and sweet. By Heather C. The Vampire Diaries, R. Blood Letting I really like the style in which this Katherine study is written--backward chronological order. It turns the whole story into this kind of character deconstruction, which just works in so many good ways for this character and story. By Ellie101. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. An Informed Decision I love the dialogue. And there's this whole kind of rhinestone vibe that feels so utterly right for the setting, and brings out some of the best qualities in the characters. By Christina. Night World, PG-13. After the Beep A remarkably inventive story that lets me really get behind (no pun intended) a pairing that I normally wouldn't go for. The sort of up-front vibe given to Meredith's narrative works frightfully well, and I love all the little sidestories. By idolatrie. The Vampire Diaries, R. Blackberry Wine It's Mrs. Flowers, as a real person with a life and feelings and pride. Do I really need to say more? By Heather C. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Your Heart of Flesh This dense imagist story presents a freshly different, original AU, a magical world that's dazzlingly horrific, yet remarkably attractive. One of the best things I've read in some time. By TangledAria. The Vampire Diaries, R. paper men So darkly beautiful. Like a butterfly collection tacked to a wall, or the colors of a fading bruise. It's Stefan, and Matt, and Damon, and all the unspoken things between them flushed to the surface. Gah. By idolatrie. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. Beginning A very quietly sensual, meditative piece that relies entirely on sensory images, taking full adavantage of the benefits of first-person perspective. By Finta. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. Stag This short piece is simply beautiful. There's a lovely sort of blurring of "the real world" and magic, rife with symbolism. By Heather C. The Secret Circle, R. Tangerine Because it's Damon eating fruit. And having delightful repartee with Stefan. Need I say more? By Heather C. The Vampire Diaries, gen, PG-13. Dandelion What a strange little anecdotal story this is, and how I love it. I like the second-person POV, and the unusual moment the story zooms in and focuses on. Great description. By Cathyrn. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Antique Brass This is an incidental tale in a possible future life for Stefan and Elena. More than just the story itself--though I adore the perspective from which this is written--I like the things that aren't said. By Finta. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Mahogany A character study of Nick. This gives a very lucid, clear, and yet dreamlike view of his personality. I kind of felt like I was reading his mind when I read this. The last line is what really makes it beautiful. By Caitlin. The Secret Circle, PG. untitled Everything about this story is great: Gabriel's obsession, Frost's compliance, and the untold stories we don't get to hear. This is what drabbles are meant to be. By Taylor. Dark Visions, PG-13. untitled Sort of written after a request from me. This piece is a pure celebration of the possible life that Damon, Elena, and Stefan could be living together. Sex written subtly and skillfully, like this, is rare indeed. By Taylor. The Vampire Diaries, R. Cream A really nice Matt/Stefan fic, with food experimentation and welcome character interaction. This pairing is well-suited for the non-explicit story (not that explicit wouldn't be nice...) because they have such a great vibe together, even in canon. By Red. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. Belladonna It took me a while just to get over the novelty of finding a well-written story with a first-person narrative, much less a brotherslashy one. But once I did I realized this story is slow and lovely and very, very sexy. I had some issues with gender/sexual representations here, but it's nothing I don't ignore a dozen times a day anyway. By River. The Vampire Diaries, NC-17. Welcome to Squeezebox This is simply an amazing story. There are certain lines that flash and sparkle with their own poetry, and when you get past the writing, you find a story of two brothers coming to terms with their very unconventional lifestyles, each in their own way. Quite possibly my favorite story in the fandom. By Ash Kennedy. The Vampire Diaries, R. Mr. Z and Mickey D Ever wanted to know what happened to Mr. Zetes after the end of Dark Visions, assuming he didn't die? Well, now you can. Warning: Don't be drinking a beverage while you read this. By Stung. PG. A Certain Vampire Named Stefan and a Blood Drive An absolutely delightful romp of a story. Robert E. Lee has a mandatory blood drive--that means you, Mr. Salvatore! Wacky hijinks ensue. By Cobalt and Lapis. The Vampire Diaries, PG. Their Bonds There's certain things I really like about this story: mainly the character interaction and bonding. I'm not a particularly big fan of the plot itself, or the prose quality, but the story altogether is very sweet. By Jamie Carlson. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. Once Bitten This is just wonderful Matt characterization--isolated, confused, yearning for things he doesn't think he can have. I also very much like Damon's portrayal as a sort of angel of mercy with ulterior motives. Awesome. By Angela Griffen. The Vampire Diaries, NC-17. After the Fury One of my all-time favorite stories in the fandom. This is about the Salvatore brothers in the immediate aftermath of the end of The Vampire Diaries: The Fury. Features some really wonderful characterization and writing quality. I really like the pacing of this. The fact that it's told from Stefan's point of view makes it especially endearing. By Elektra Pendragon. R. Upstairs By Elektra Pendragon I'm biased on this one, because this story was written as a present to me. I think it's well-written no matter how you look at it, though, not to mention hot. This is a missing scene from Dark Reunion, costarring Damon and Stefan, with Mrs. Flowers making a cameo. A tale of two brothers in love, or at least, in lust. By Elektra Pendragon. The Vampire Diaries, NC-17. Checkmate A sort-of sequel to Red's "The Crow and the Falcon,", recommended earlier on this page. It's a very engaging story starring one of the original characters, Adam, and chronicles his initiation (of sorts) by none other than Damon himself. Wonderfully sexy, with great dialogue and a pace that'll keep you glued to the screen. By Ash Kennedy. The Vampire Diaries, NC-17. The Knife Wow. Just...wow. This story took my breath away the first time I read it, and it still continues to do so. It's told from Dee's point-of-view, which I think is a first for the fandom, and it's about what lengths she'll go to in order to keep Jenny safe. It has a really nice dreamy quality to it. By Janet. The Forbidden Game, R. The Crow and the Falcon This was one of the earliest novel-length fanfics written in the fandom. Some very nice, realistic original characters, and a pretty engaging plot that'll keep you reading through to the end. Some of the themes in this (especially regarding Damon) have since become quite overdone, but they weren't at the time of the writing. By Red. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. Candyland. Chocolate Sauce. Hemoglobin. This whimsical utterly wonderfully gay story that has little to do with canon and everything to do with crack-addledness made me die laughing. I am dead. By Ash Kennedy. The Vampire Diaries, PG-13. Chocolate-Covered Damon This isn't the only Vampire Diaries/Forbidden Game crossover out there, but it's the only one I really like. This is Damon and Julian playing a particular sort of Game. Very hot, with some great supporting details. By Elektra Pendragon. NC-17. Peppermint A little Caroline story abut loyalties and pretty girls. I just adore the pacing of this, and the words themselves, and the way certain lines stuck in my head for hours after I read it.
